Wednesday, 1 June 2005

Kampala ( Fides Service)- The 15th plenary assembly of the Association of Member Bishops Conferences of Eastern Africa AMECEA opens today at Mukono, near Kampala, capital of Uganda. The theme of the meeting is “Meeting the challenge of HIV/AIDS in the AMECEA region”.
The theme was chosen because at the last plenary assembly in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania, the bishops of the region resolved to increase the Church’s commitment to fight the spread of HIV virus and to assist people with AIDS.
AMECEA was established in 1961 and it comprises the Catholic bishops of Eritrea, Ethiopia, Kenya, Malawi, Sudan, Tanzania, Uganda and Zambia. Plenary meetings are held every three years and since 1961 there have been 14 assemblies. (L.M.) (Agenzia Fides 1/6/2005 righe 17 parole 140)
