EUROPE/SWITZERLAND - Insecticide-treated nets and microbial larvicides could help fight malaria in Kenya

Thursday, 3 September 2009

Geneva (Agenzia Fides) – A child's risk of getting malaria in Kenya could be greatly reduced thanks to a new combination of remedies aimed at destroying mosquito larvae that cause the infection and using insecticide-treated nets (ITN). This is what has been revealed in the most recent edition of the bulletin published by the World Health Organization, one of the main periodicals on public health mainly concentrated on developing nations. It has been proven that with this combined anti-larva effort and distribution of ITN could favor a significant reduction in the spread of malaria in western Kenya. In the last 50 years, in tropical Africa, the control of the carrier has been mainly concentrated in the adult mosquito. With this new study, there will be an effort to control the mosquito beginning at its larval stage, with the goal of reducing malaria in several parts of sub-Saharan Africa.
