EUROPE/SPAIN - Day for analyzing the efficiency of youth drug prevention activity

Wednesday, 10 June 2009

Madrid (Agenzia Fides) – A study performed by the University of Valencia, promoted by the Don Bosco Confederation, with the support of the Health and Social-Political Minister, concluded that youth who participate in awareness campaigns have an at least 10-point increased perception of the risks of drug consumption. However, the rate of youth drug consumption is a cause for concern. The average age for beginning drug consumption is 13-15 years of age and although the youth show their concern for the risks, they place more importance on what they expect as benefits from the drug.
With this data, the Don Bosco Confederation, which includes 137 Salesian youth centers, has organized a Day on the “Efficiency of youth drug prevention activity,” meant for individuals and entities that work in the area of drug prevention, to analyze what is being done and place guidelines for the future. This Day, which will take place in Madrid, on June 27, will analyze the present situation in relation to the use of drugs among the youth, in an effort to link this to our work of awareness and prevention. The event will be attended by representatives from the National Drug Plan, the University of Valencia, the Anti-Drug Addiction Support Foundation, ASDE-Scouts of Spain, and the Information Service, Orientation, and Attention Services of the City of San Cristobal de la Laguna.
The Don Bosco Confederation is an association that began in 1991 and works alongside 10 other federations and 137 youth centers in defense and promotion of childhood and youth, especially those at risk for marginalization, through youth responsibility, using the educational method of St. John Bosco. Their work is seem in various programs, such as: education in values, quality living for children, health education, formation, employment, volunteer training and awareness, and other youth initiatives on a continental level.
