Hong Kong (Agenzia Fides) – Unite efforts to fight the environmental and financial crises in the world: this is the conviction that the Christian leaders of Hong Kong have expressed during the prayer encounter they organized during the Week of Prayer for Christian Unity. According to a report form the Kong Ko Bao (the Chinese version of the diocesan bulletin), nearly 500 Christians of various confessions have participated in the encounter, which took place at the Anglican Parish of Saint John in Hong Kong. All of them emphasized the importance of Christian teachings on solidarity.
According to one Catholic priest, “Christians should unite efforts to protect the Lord's creation.” One Protestant pastor said that “Christians should preach the Good News of Christ, to fight consumerism.” According to one Anglican Bishop, “in recent months, Bible sales have sharply increased. This is a sign of the great spiritual thirst of the people.” Several Christians also called for progress in the commitment to unity among Christians through prayer encounters (now the most common way to celebrate the Week which is in fact a “Week of Prayer”), social services – concrete gestures to spread awareness in socity – and working with young Christians. Another prayer encounter, in English, took place in the Parish of Saint Peter. (NZ) (Agenzia Fides 23/01/2009)
