EUROPE/ITALY - International Congress on “Life-Sustaining Treatments and Vegetative State: Scientific Advances and Ethical Dilemmas “

Rome (Fides Service) - On Tuesday 16 March at 11am, at the Vatican Press Room there will be the presentation of an international Congress “Life-Sustaining Treatments and Vegetative State: Scientific Advances and Ethical Dilemmas”, organised by the Italian Federation of Associations of Catholic Doctors FIAMC and the Pontifical Academy for Life, PAV 17-20 March at the Augustinianum College in Rome.
During the Congress participants will discuss scientific progress in a difficult field of Vegetative State of life and experts will try to answer complex moral questions involved. Some 300 people from 35 different countries have announced their participation, including many non Christians, Jews, Muslims, Hindus.
Speakers at the press conference included Bishop Elio Sgreccia, PAV Vice-President PAV, Prof. Gian Luigi Gigli, FIAMC President and one of the main speakers at the congress, Prof. Alan Shewmon, Neurologist at the University of California in Los Angeles (UCLA).
For the occasion the FIAMC will present a CD, prepared as a gift the Pope for the 25th year of his pontificate. It is an interactive CD in English and Italian with the teachings of Pope John Paul II on matters of health and bio-ethics. (AP) (15/3/2004 Agenzia Fides; Righe:23 Parole:242)
