EUROPE/POLAND - Special Edition of “Generation John Paul II”: a guide to World Youth Day, including for those who cannot travel to Sydney

Tuesday, 15 July 2008

Czestochowa (Agenzia Fides) – On the occasion of World Youth Day in Sydney, the Polish Catholic weekly “Niedzela,” the most widely-read magazine in Poland, headquartered in Czestochowa, has recently published a special edition of their magazine entitled “Generation,” made for young people. 180,000 copies of the issue have been printed.
“Generation” is a publication linked to “Niedzela,” which began April 1, 2007. The first issue came out on the 2nd anniversary of the death of Pope John Paul II. “Generation” is dedicated to youth who are members of “Generation JP2” (John Paul II). The publication offers youth articles on Christian culture, missions, evangelization, social and moral topics, all based on the teachings of John Paul II and Benedict XVI.
The Special Edition of “Generation” presents the history of World Youth Day since 1984. The supplement contains testimonies from youth who have participated in the international youth encounters with Servant of God John Paul II and with Pope Benedict XVI. The text is enriched with photos and illustrations done by collaborators and by the photographers of the Weekly Journal. The magazine also holds that official program for World Youth Day in Sydney. “Generation” hopes to be a spiritual and cultural guide for World Youth Day, especially for those youth who cannot journey to Sydney in person.
“World Youth Day is one of the most important pastoral initiatives of Servant of God Pope John Paul II and continued by the Holy Father Benedict XVI,” Niedzela’s Editor-in-Chief Msgr. Ireneusz Skubiś, told Fides. “In producing the most widely-known Catholic magazine in Poland, we should present the youth of our era with the wealth of the Gospel and the wealth and relevance of the teachings of the Great Pope John Paul II and Pope Benedict XVI. We should accompany “generation JP2,” the youth that, as John Paul II said and as Benedict XVI repeats, are ‘the springtime and hope of the world and of the Church.’” (MF/SL) (Agenzia Fides 15/7/2008)
