ASIA/CHINA - New message from the Pope for earthquake victims deeply moves China and encourages Chinese Catholics working on the frontline in relief effort

Beijing (Agenzia Fides) - Several members of official Chinese mass media and numerous Chinese Catholic websites immediately published the new message given by Pope Benedict XVI at the Angelus on Sunday, May 25, for China’s earthquake victims. One of the most highly-regarded official Chinese websites, www.chinareviewnews.com, also reported on the World Day of Prayer for the Church in China, celebrated in Rome and around the world. In conclusion, it quoted Cardinal Bertone, saying, “Cardinal Bertone himself, Vatican Secretary of State, says that the dialogue between the Holy See and China is showing signs of progress.”
Both Catholic and non-Catholic Chinese media reported that the bells of the Basilica of Saint Mary Major in Rome tolled for the victims. They also mentioned the minute for mourning, which was observed and the collection that was made during the Mass celebrated on May 24 by Cardinal Ivan Dias, Prefect for the Congregation for the Evangelization of Peoples. The Chinese Catholic websites reported on the Pope’s great encouragement and support that has become a source of renewed strength and energy for the entire Catholic community, especially for those who are working at the site of the earthquake.
