EUROPE/SPAIN - International Symposium on Catholic Social Doctrine reflects on new needs of integral development in new world scenarios

Madrid (Agenzia Fides) - An International Symposium on Catholic Social Doctrine organised by the Spanish Bishops' Commission for Social Pastoral care will be held at the Paul VI Foundation in Madrid 30 November and 1 December, to mark the 40th anniversary of the encyclical 'Populorum Progressio' by Pope Paul VI a papal document which marked the Church's activity in the field of international development and cooperation.
The purpose of the Symposium is to reflect with the help of experts in the field on the new needs of integral development in the new scenarios and to commemorate and reread the Encyclical in order to update ecclesial service offered by the Church in the context of development and in the new forms of necessity.
The Symposium is for volunteers and operators of ‘Manos Unidas’ and Caritas, Catholic NGOs and missionaries who collaborate in international co-operation programmes, members of justice and peace groups, economists, politicians and development experts. The conference themes are the following: "Memory and timeliness of the Encyclical Populorum Progressio. A challenge for the Church" by Dr. Darío Vitali, of the Pontifical Gregorian University in Rome and "Education for integral development: mechanisms and proposals" by Cardinal Óscar Rodríguez Madariaga, Archbishop of Tegucigalpa president of Caritas Internationalis.
