Managua (Agenzia Fides) - After the third session of the talks, which began on 27 February (see Fide,s 26/02/2019), the negotiating groups have not yet reached a consensus on how to proceed: the government continues to refuse the presence of the Organization of American States (OAS) and United Nations (UN), as guarantors. On the first of March, after more than eight hours of talks, the members of the negotiating table issued a statement announcing that the talks will continue next Monday. We will continue to seek consensus on the three points in the "road map" already outlined, so as to be able to deal with the substantive issues that have to do with freedom, democracy and justice.
According to Fides sources, among the points that have not yet been defined, there are the appointments of international mediators and guarantors, as was proposed by the Civic Alliance: this approach was rejected by the government of Ortega who defined it as "foreign interference".
"We hope that soon the road map can be made official. Without clear rules, without well-defined rules, it is not possible to carry out a serious and responsible dialogue" said one of the representatives of the Civic Alliance.
Cardinal Brenes, Archbishop of Managua and President of the Episcopal Conference, and the Apostolic Nuncio Mgr. Stanislaw Sommertag were present at the talks. These intervened on the first day, presenting the wish of the Holy Father and of the international community for a positive outcome of the "National Dialogue", together with the request, still not accepted by the government, to involve international organizations at the negotiating table.
The Nicaraguan community was very surprised by the absence of Mgr. Rolando Alvarez, Bishop of the diocese of Matagalpa, while the release of 100 political prisoners of the almost 700 in jail was welcomed, but with great caution.
The words of Nuncio Stanislaw Waldemar Sommertag continue to make not only the members of the Dialogue table reflect, but also the entire Nicaraguan people: "Gathered in this sincere and open encounter, and with an attitude of political, social and economic goodwill, you have a unique opportunity to go down in history as true sons of this country, who have managed to understand each other and have reached a national solution for the good of our beloved Nicaragua".
