Tripoli (Agenzia Fides) - "There are limited disorders, although one cannot deny that these people are tied to the old regime. Overall, however, the situation appears to be under control", says to Fides His Exc.Mgr Giovanni Innocenzo Martinelli, Apostolic Vicar of Tripoli, after the clashes which broke out on Oct. 14 in the Libyan capital between the men of the National Transitional Council (NTC) and those who remained loyal to Gaddafi. The clashes, which lasted several hours, resulted in three deaths and thirty injuries, according to reports from the NTC.
In the meantime the fighting in the strongholds of Gaddafi in Sirte and Bani Walid continue, which are causing many casualties, many of whom are hit by snipers. "In hospitals, unfortunately, the situation remains dramatic - says the Apostolic Vicar of Tripoli -. Most of the wounded have been shot in the spine. They are our saddness. We do not know how to cater to the many emergencies. It is a tragic reality that brings me so much pain. I am launching appeals because in addition to sending medical materials, further efforts are required to hospitalize the most serious cases in specialized facilities. Medicines are definitely needed, as well as direct support for these young people. In fact the men injured in the fighting are all young. There is an effort of solidarity between the Libyans to help the wounded, but it is not enough, more must be done by the international community", concludes Mgr. Martinelli. (L.M.)
