ASIA/ TAIWAN - Archbishop Joseph Ti Kang, emeritus archbishop of Tai Pei donates 80th birthday gifts to build a new Yu Jen Vocational Training Centre for Mentally Retarded Youth

Tai Pei (Agenzia Fides) - Archbishop Joseph Ti Kang, emeritus Archbishop of Tai Pei, recently donated his 80th birthday gifts to support the Yu Jen Vocational Training Center for Mentally Retarded Youth. According to the Tai Pei Christian Life Weekly, The Centre, founded in 1977, is a private enterprise of the social service of the Catholic Kuang Jen Social Welfare of the archdiocese of Tai Pei, of which Archbishop Joseph Ti is delegate administrator and he is also and director of the Centre. On the occasion of his 80th birthday the Archbishop received many good wishes and generous offerings which he immediately offered to the Centre.
The Yu Jen Vocational Training Center for Mentally Retarded Youth was opened in 1977 by a Belgian Scheut Missionary (CICM). In these 30 years it has cared for 4,000 patients aged 16 to 45 with serious mental deficiencies. In 1979 it was registered as Taiwan's first centre for Mentally Retarded Youth. Since 1989 it has been administered by the Catholic Kuang Jen Social Welfare of Tai Pei archdiocese. Besides medical care the centre offers the inmates support for employment, formation for life, psychological assistance and opportunities for recreation and amusement. The build is old and needs to be rebuilt The new centre will be funded by the local Catholic Church, the civil authorities and generous benefactors.
