Vatican City (Agenzia Fides) - Wednesday 24 February 1858: penance, 8ª apparition. “Bernadette, we are told by M. Estrade, just after falling into ecstasy went to put her ear to the rock and then like someone receiving sad news let her arms fall, and tears ran down her cheeks. In an attitude of humility she began to walk on her knees, kissing the ground at every stop. Eyewitnesses said the Lady appeared first on the rosebush and then as usual she disappeared and that Bernadette went to look for her inside the Grotto and then found her. She then turned to the crowd of about 400-500 and in tears and with a broken voice repeated the message of Immaculate Mary: «Penance, penance, penance!».” (J.M.)
