EUROPE/SPAIN - “When a society accepts abortion it is preparing to eliminate freedom”: Conclusions of 1st international congress on “Women and Abortion”

Thursday, 29 March 2007

Caceres (Agenzia Fides) - "Abortion implicates denying the existence of the life of a human person" we read in the conclusions issued at the end of 1st international congress on “Women and Abortion” organised by the Spanish Family Forum and held in Caceres, Spain, 8 to 10 March (see Fides 8/3/2007).
Abortion not only denies the existence "of a life which must develop and become complete in autonomy", it denies the life of the "mother and the father ". Referring to what is called post abortion syndrome the statement says women must be informed of the real dangers of abortion and also with regard to the use of methods and drugs such as RU-486 "said to ensure safe abortion", when the reality is quite different. The same is true of the “day after pill”.
The statement says the public must be made aware of the interests behind abortion promotion, economic, vote hunting philosophical stances, social plans, “a chorus which invades the media", a field which calls for the presence of pro-life activists.
With regard to research the Conclusions recall promising alternatives to the use of embryonic stem cells, cells found in the umbilical cord and amniotic liquid and it reiterates that human embryos cannot used for research because this is morally wrong, a violation of the dignity of the human person .
The Conclusions also recall the possibility of conscious objection to such research and practice and conclude" When a society accepts abortion it is preparing to eliminate freedom" the conclusions affirm. The participants resolved to build a social network to fight the plague of abortion and propose and promote effective family policies. (RG) (Agenzia Fides 29/3/2007; righe 30, parole 389)
