AMERICA/CANADA - Critical approach to the challenge of globalisation for Latin America, towards CELAM 5

Monday, 5 March 2007

Rome (Fides Service) - "Globalisation and Christian Humanism. Looking at Latin America is the title of a book published in French by the Anne Sigier publishing house in Québec, Canada written by Prof. Guzmán Carriquiry Lecour, under-secretary of the Pontifical Council for the Laity. This is a new edition of the same book published in Italian in 2003 (see Fides 2/7/2003). In the presentation Cardinal Marc Ouellet, Archbishop of Québec, says "one rarely finds such a complete critical approach so rich in aspects, on the challenges of globalisation in Latin America, which gives adequate attention to the ethic, historical and cultural dimension as well as the economic, social and political factors ".
The work aims to help understand the “global” reality of Latin America, after the historical turning point 1989/1992 and the 9 September 2001 terrorist attacks. The author considers “Latin America’s role on the scene of globalisation, a new world order, Catholicity and the great battles of this beginning of the 21st century”. The volume, received with interest in the ecclesial, political, economic, academic fields, is considered by many a useful contribution in preparation for the 5th General Conference of the Council of Latin American Bishops’ Conferences CELAM 5 in Brazil in May.
