Tai Chung (Agenzia Fides) - A love which knows no boundaries between faiths was how Kao Hsiung diocesan ShanTao Catholic Weekly describes the generosity of an elderly Buddhist lady, who signs herself simply, a disciple of Buddha, and over a period of 12 years has donated 23 million Taiwan dollars (about 575,000 Euro) to Catholic charity centres run by the Kung Tai Foundation. The Buddhist benefactor of modest means and simple lifestyle only revealed her identity recently when the Catholic operators of the Foundation insisted on meeting her.
The woman has been a constant donor for 12 years, her only request was to remain anonymous. With her help the Foundation paid the rent for offices and conference halls, purchased beds and equipment for Luo Dong Catholic Hospital which treats patients with cancer, especially the terminally ill. A Foundation member explains: “At first we encountered many difficulties, some people asked why bother with the dying when there are so many others in need of treatment. It was difficult to find funds. But our ‘Disciple of Buddha’ has been of great help. She knows no boundaries of faith and has always encouraged us in her letters”.
The Kung Tai Catholic Sanipax Socio-Medical Service&Education foundation was founded 24 years ago by Catholic students of medicine anxious to give loving care to the sick, especially cancer patients. The Foundation has since formed various groups: medical education, service of the elderly, diabetic children, service for the sick, evangelisation of medicine and a medical formation resource network.
