EUROPE/ROMANIA - Mixed Marriages and the Family in Europe : Annual Meeting of the Catholic Bishops' Conferences of South-East Europe

Friday, 23 February 2007

Oradea (Agenzia Fides) - From 1st to 4th March 2007, the Presidents of the Catholic Bishops' Conferences of South-East Europe will meet for the seventh time in Oradea (Romania), along with a group of experts. Seven bishops' Conferences will be represented: Albania, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Bulgaria, Greece, Romania, the international bishops’ Conference of St Cyril and Methodius (Serbia and Montenegro-Macedonia) and Turkey. The representatives of the Holy See in Romania and to the EU, some bishops of the Bishops' Conference of Romania and the General Secretariat of the Commission of the Bishops’ Conferences of the European Union (COMECE) will also attend. This meeting is organised by the Council of the Bishops' Conferences of Europe (CCEE) and will be hosted by the Bishops' Conference of Romania and by the Greek-Catholic Bishop of Oradea Mare, H.E. Mgr. Virgil Bercea.
The meeting will be centred on the current topical themes: mixed marriages and the family in Europe. The reflection will especially dwell on marriages between a Catholic and a person baptised according to another Christian confession and between the Catholic and a non-baptised person. During the meeting, the results of a CCEE research on the family in Europe will be presented. Various other topical issues will be considered by the Presidents of the Bishops' Conferences of South-East Europe: the Third European Ecumenical Assembly (Sibiu, Romania, 4th to 9th September 2007); the Pope's visit to Turkey and the entry of Romania and Bulgaria into the European Union. This gathering also includes meetings with the local community and with representatives of the Orthodox Church and of the public arena.
On Friday 2nd March at 8am, in the Greek-Catholic Cathedral of Oradea the Presidents of the Bishops' Conferences of South-East Europe will attend a Byzantine liturgy with the students of the Greek Catholic Lyceum of Oradea. And on Sunday 4th March at 10am they will take part in a Eucharistic Celebration with the faithful of the city, again in the Greek-Catholic cathedral of Oradea. (S.L.)
