Cardinal Pengo takes the place of Archbishop John Onaiyekan of Abuja, Nigeria, who in his opening address to the meeting said he wished to retire as SECAM President. The assembly elected as first vice president Archbishop Theodore Adrien Sarr of Dakar, in Senegal, and second vice president Bishop Francesco Joao Silota of Chimono, Mozambique.
Archbishop Onaiyekan thanked all those who helped in one way of another to make SECAM grow and added that he was willing to take on any task the new president might want to assign him for the development of the continental association.
In his address to accept the position Cardinal Pengo promised to continue the good work started by his predecessors, especially Archbishop Onaiykan and the other members of the SECAM council of presidency and he urged all the members of the association to continue to work for the mission of SECAM.
