AFRICA/BENIN - New rector appointed for Saint Gall Major Seminary in Cotonou

Vatican City (Agenzia Fides) - Cardinal Ivan Dias, Prefect of the Congregation for the Evangelisation of Peoples, on 4 August 2006, appointed Rector of the Saint Gall Major Inter-diocesan Seminary in Cotonou (Benin), Rev. Didier Gnitona of the diocesan clergy of Natitingou.
The new Rector was born on 13 February 1957 at Kountchougou (Boukoumbé). He went to Our Lady of Fatima minor Seminary in Parakou (1970/78), and then to Saint Gall Major Seminary (1979/84). He then studied Canon Law at the Pontifical Urban University where he obtained a Doctorate (1986/1990). He was ordained a priest on 7 July 1984 in Manta. He has since held the following responsibilities: assistant priest at Natitingou Cathedral (1984/86); rector of Saint Pierre minor seminary in Natitingou (1991/98); parish priest at the cathedral; diocesan director of Catholic Schools (1998); diocesan director of the Pontifical Mission Societies; Chaplain for the diocesan Charismatic Renewal.
