New Delhi (Fides Service) - Archbishop Thomas Menamparampil has been elected chairman of the Office of Evangelisation of the Federation of Asian Bishops’ Conferences, FABC, for the third time. Archbishop Menamparampil, a Salesian, is Archbishop of Guwahati diocese in the north eastern state of Assam. The election was announced on the occasion of the Asian Mission Congress in Chiang Mai, Thailand, which has just closed.
ANS Salesian news agency reported that Archbishop Menamparampil, who served as chairman of the same office for two terms, 1986-92, was very surprised when asked to take up the responsibility after a lapse of 15 years. During the earlier period of office he had initiated a reflection on the cultures and civilisations of Asia, organised a special meeting for the countries under communist regimes and reaffirmed Asia’s commitment to evangelisation. He was Special Secretary for the Special Synod of Bishops for Asia held in Rome in 1998. He has published books and articles on evangelisation, culture, religious life and prayer and other sibjects.
Archbishop Menamparampil is known to be an able mediator and promoter of peace and justice and reconciliation in the travailed area of north east India where he has mediated in ethnic conflicts. He has always said that Christians have a special contribution to make to the country. Catholics, about 2 million in that area, can help build peace and social harmony starting from the family, school, religious community, associations and universities. He coordinates a Joint Ecumenical Peace Team, working in the field of inter-religious dialogue. He is also chairman of the Indian Bishops’ Commission for Education and Chairman of the North eastern Bishops’ Council. (PA) (Agenzia Fides 23/10/2006 righe 28 parole 281)
