Potosi (Agenzia Fides) - “Stay with us Lord” is the theme of the 3rd Diocesan Eucharistic Congress 1-8 October which opens after 9 months of intense preparation in the Bolivian diocese of Potosi. The main purpose of the Congress is to intensify personal and community encounter with Jesus Christ: Word and Real Presence in the Eucharist, encounter which leads to commitment to build a world of more brotherhood and solidarity. Three specific aims are the following: that the Word of God, source and nourishment of Christian life may be proclaimed with more respect and attention during liturgical celebrations; for the Eucharist to be a real living experience with Jesus Christ more importance must be given to Mass on Sunday as the Lord’s Day; that from the Eucharist the people will draw nourishment and promote all Christian activity in the mission to build a world of brotherhood and solidarity.
The diocese of Potosí celebrated the previous Eucharistic Congress from 9 to 13 September 1942. At that time the Catholics renewed with enthusiasm their Christian fervour. Now 64 years later the local Church hopes to live a similar experience. Congress co-ordinator, Rev Gustavo Rivero, said he hoped the event would offer the country a sign of peace, hope and unity in the present difficult situation in Bolivia. "Certainly the Congress will be a time for the local Church to stop and reflect -, to discuss a series of questions to strengthen the faith and increase devotion towards the Blessed Sacrament".
The Congress began with a special Holy Mass concelebrated by all the priests of the diocese in their respective parishes even the most remote. In the coming days there will be various initiatives in the parishes with the celebration of Mass in the morning, visits to families during the day and workshops in the evenings on questions connected with the Eucharist.
