Monte E Mei (Agenzia Fides) - “I introduce myself as the Catholic nun in charge of this Spirituality and Holiday Centre. My task is to render glory to God by organising our hospitality centre” says Sr. Yang Huang Xiu, directress of Mount E Mei “Peace Holiday Village”. A Catholic church dedicated to St Joseph built on the slopes of China most famous Buddhist mount is news in itself. What is more the Peace Holiday Village run by the Catholic nuns has become a field for evangelisation and pastoral activity. Sr. Yang told He Bei Catholic bulletin Faith “People come here all the year round. In the quiet periods we visit some of the 40 local Catholic families in the community of about 500 faithful. We give them news of the universal Church and other local Catholic communities in China, religious books and also give catechism classes. Several lapsed Catholics have returned with joy to practising the faith. A number of catechumens received the Sacrament of baptism. People come ever more frequently for the Sacrament of Reconciliation and there is growing participation in church activity, church choirs for example and Christmas activities... we have helped people solve difficulties and helped to increase missionary awareness.”
At this internationally famous holiday resort “the Catholics who work in the shop, the hotel, or travel agency speak openly about their faith, keeping the principles of honesty and guaranteeing an excellent service in the Christian spirit, transforming in this way their activity in activity of evangelisation” said Sr. Yang. “We have pasted a Catholic newspaper and other information in our window so tourists can read and ask questions. Among other books our shop also sells Bibles and other Catholic religious works and they are the most popular ! In the future we hope to expand our mission to offer the Good News to as many people as possible.” (Agenzia Fides 4/09/2006 Righe: 33 Parole: 387)
