EUROPE/SPAIN - On line Dictionary of Religious Words: Christian words and terms once so familiar now unknown to many

Monday, 24 July 2006

Canary Islands (Agenzia Fides) - The web site of the Spanish diocese of Islas Canarias Canary Islands has an interesting new feature, Vocabulario de las Palabras Religosas, a Religious Dictionary compiled by Salesian Father Felipe Santos
In daily contact with the people, young people especially, Fr Santos noted that few are familiar with key Christian religious words and terms. In these times of advanced information technology, means of communication with everyone’s reach he found that many people were totally ignorant of religious words.
In the introduction to his Religious Dictionary Father Santos explains that he realised the need for many to start from the beginning. Today few people have a clear understanding of religious concepts familiar to all not long ago.
The Dictionary uses simple language to explain Christian religious words and terms including the Books of the Bible, Biblical terms, the names of the prophets and other important figures, the names of religious and liturgical objects, a list of most frequently used words, the names used to describe the different members and institutions of the Catholic Church...
