AMERICA/MEXICO - “With this initiative become evangelisers, announcers of the Gospel of charity in your environments”: Cardinal Rivera inaugurates 2006 Charity Campaign

Mexico City (Agenzia Fides) - Mexico’s 2006 Charity Campaign was inaugurated by Cardinal Norberto Rivera Carrera, Archbishop of Mexico City on 23 May. The main goal of the campaign is to foster a spirit of charity by involving individuals, families and groups in collecting regular donations over a period of six weeks to support Caritas projects. The secondary goal is to collect funds for initiatives in five strategic areas chosen by Caritas Mexico City: disaster prevention and emergency aid; prevention and aid in local districts and communities of critical situations which affect young people especially; non formal education and promotion for adults in family and community environments; prevention and care for women in disadvantaged social, nutritional and health situations…; promotion of indigenous peoples and migrants with special concern for children.
In his address Cardinal Norberto Rivera underlined the importance of the Campaign which involves so many lay people “moved by charity, with enthusiasm they devote their time, talents and resources to promoting the most noble causes of our society served by Caritas and other Church initiatives". The Charity Campaign is planned to involve lay people “hope for new evangelisation”. “You, the Cardinal said - with this initiative become evangelisers, announcers of the Gospel of charity in your environments”. Although the campaign consists mainly in collecting funds it above all a “silent proclamation of God and his pure truth and essence: love made visible in service of the poor”.
