AFRICA/BURUNDI - Diocesan Synod priority pastoral commitment this year: Archbishop of Gitega says there is work for everyone in the Church to announce the Gospel of life and peace

Gitega (Fides Service) - Archbishop Simon Ntanwana of Gitega has said every Catholic in the diocese has a contribution to make to the major pastoral priority this year, the Diocesan Synod. “The year 2006 will be marked by increasing awareness in view of the diocesan synod as well as our usual activity - Archbishop Ntanwana writes in his editorial in the Entre Nous diocesan magazine.-. This commitment involves everyone, no one is dispensed. We must work as a family, each in his or her own field, at work, in the apostolate, in the family. We are all “chargés d’affaires” for the Synod. I urge you let this project aimed at forgiveness and reconciliation live in your heart, mind and will so that the Church may announce resolutely the Gospel of life and peace”.
“The year 2006 leads us to Christ who is the true source of reconciliation - the Archbishop writes -. The theme, taken from the general orientations of the Synod, must be the subject of catechesis, homilies, meetings and retreats. With capillary communication we can prompt people to take an active part in the diocesan Synod”. The Synod, which will last for 3 years, was convoked by Archbishop Ntamwana after he had spoken with the diocesan council of priests. He then had meetings with parish priests, all the clergy, General Superiors and local superior of religious communities in a Gitega. At the level of the laity the Archbishop met administrative and military authorities of the provinces of Karusi and Mwaro. He then appointed a preparatory committee of 12 priests, 3 Brothers, 4 Sisters and 11 lay people who will work in sub-committees in the following fields: Synod regulations, funding, communications, awareness building, office work and catechesis. At the end of its work which will last for a year, the Committee will hand over to the members of the Synod. Information on the nature and purpose Synod has been diffused by means of a special handbook prepared and printed by the diocese. (R.F.) (Agenzia Fides 15/5/2006 - righe 26, parole 355)
