Rome (Agenzia Fides) - Pope Emeritus Benedict XVI has returned to the Father’s House. His heart stopped beating at 9.34 AM on Saturday morning in his residence at the Mater Ecclesiae Monastery, which the 95-year-old Pope emeritus had chosen as his residence after resigning from the Petrine ministry in 2013.
"With sorrow I inform you that the Pope Emeritus, Benedict XVI, passed away today at 9:34 AM in the Mater Ecclesiae Monastery in the Vatican. Further information will be provided as soon as possible", reads the note from the director of the Holy See Press Office, Matteo Bruni, released in the morning.
From Monday, January 2, 2023, the body of Benedict XVI will be lying in state in St. Peter's Basilica in the Vatican, where the People of God will be able to pay their last respects to the great Pontiff, giving thanks to the Lord for having given him to His Church.
During a briefing in the Holy See Press Office, the director also reported that the funeral will be held in St. Peter's Square on Thursday, January 5, 2023, at 9.30 AM. Pope Francis will preside over the funeral of the Pope Emeritus. Bruni also said the Pope Emeritus on Wednesday, 28th, received the Sacrament of Anointing of the Sick at the end of Mass in the Monastery, in the presence of the Memores Domini, the consecrated laywomen who had assisted him daily for many years.
