AFRICA/UGANDA - Commission established for Catholic Education

Kampala (Fides Service- With a colourful and participated ceremony on 22 April at Cardinal Nsubuga Leadership Training Centre, the Church in Uganda established its own Commission for Catholic Education. Archbishop Paul Bakyenga of Mbarara who is president of the Catholic Bishops’ Conference of Uganda said in his opening discourse that three years ago in keeping with the teaching of the universal Church the Church in Uganda adopted a new educational concept in order to provide Ugandans with quality formation at Catholic schools.
Archbishop Bakyenga thanked Archbishop Christophe Pierre, papal nuncio in Uganda, and all who helped to put into concrete action in Uganda the recent pontifical document on Catholic Education.
Papal Nuncio Pierre underlined that the Catholic Church has the duty to spread the Gospel of Jesus Christ also through education.
The ceremony was presided by Bishop Charles Martin Wamika auxiliary of the archdiocese of Tororo who is president of the Commission for Education of the Ugandan Bishops’ Conference.
In Uganda the Catholic Church runs 512 kindergartens for 44,807 infants; 3,3850 primary schools for 2, 249,801 pupils; 559 secondary schools for 208,540 pupils (Catholic Church Book of Statistics 2003). (L.M.) (Agenzia Fides 24/4/2006 righe 26 parole 212)
