EUROPE/BELGIUM - New National Director of Pontifical Mission Societies appointed

Vatican City (Fides Service) - Cardinal Crescenzio Sepe Prefect of the Congregation for the Evangelisation of Peoples on March 7 2006 appointed national director of the Pontifical Mission Societies in Belgium for a five year term (2006-2011) Rev. Hendrik Hoet of the diocesan clergy of Antwerp.
The new national director was born in Wilrijk (Antwerp) in 1948. He was ordained a priest in 1977. He studied philosophy, letters and theology at K.U. Leuven obtaining his degree in 1973. From 1973 to 1975 he taught philosophy at the inter-diocesan Seminary in west Kasai (Kananga-former Zaire). He studied in Rome for a doctorate in biblical theology at the Pontifical Gregorian University 1980. He then taught in various seminaries and formation houses exegesis, introduction to the Bible, New and Old Testament, Judaism, homiletics, inter-religious dialogue… He has been: member of the National Catholic Commission for Ecumenism; president of the National Catholic Commission for relations with the Jewish world; president of the body for Catholic/Jewish relations in Belgium; rector of Antwerp diocesan seminary and in charge of diocesan priests’ formation; diocesan director of Missio Antwerpen (PMS); ecclesiastic assistant for S. Egidio Community in Belgium. He has published works in English and French on ecclesiology, ecumenism, inter-religious dialogue, sacred scripture. (S.L.)
