ASIA/PHILIPPINES - Asia-Pacific religious leaders unite to stop terrorism and eliminate poverty

Cebu (Fides Service) - Leaders of different religions in the Asia-Pacific region have vowed to work together to help stop terrorism, eliminate poverty and injustice and promote peace and social harmony. The resolution was reached at a recent Interfaith Meeting in Cebu Cuty in the Philippines.
Over 150 leaders, Christians, Muslims, Buddhists, Hindus agreed on the necessity for believers to be united to stop terrorism, eliminate poverty, promote the wellbeing and progress of peoples and development of small local communities.
Another issue discussed was the function of the media and the fact that communication among peoples and individuals is ever swifter and better. The religious leaders agreed that the media rather than fan flames of division and hatred can and must promote a spirit of dialogue and harmony,.
The organiser of the Asia-Pacific Interfaith Meeting, Bishop Dinuald Gutierrez also head of the Justice and Peace Commission of the Catholics Bishops’ Conference of the Philippines said he was satisfied with the outcome of the meeting and was certain it would be followed by similar initiatives.
The Bishop said the participants vowed to maintain and develop with sincerity and honesty the proposals and commitments adopted at the meeting, working to build universal peace and promote a spirit of brotherhood among all men and women believers and non believers.
