ASIA/BANGLADESH - Radio Veritas Bengali Programme marks 25 years of mission: local Church celebrates, Muslims voice praise and appreciation for Radio’s work

Dacca (Fides Service) - Radio Veritas Asia Bengali Programme marked its 25th anniversary this month. The event was given widespread attention by the local Church which sees the Radio as an important channel of support for the Catholic minority and for evangelisation
Anniversary initiatives in Dacca included a meeting and a special Mass with the presence of the papal Nuncio Archbishop Emil Paul Tschang In-Nam, five local Bishops, Divine Word missionary Fr. Joseph Eilers, Secretary of the Federation of Asian Bishops’ Conferences, numerous priests, men and women religious and about 400 people members of Listeners Clubs from 40 districts of Bangladesh.
During the meeting 50 members shared their comments and opinions with regard to Radio Veritas programmes and made suggestions for future programmes. They said Radio Veritas is a useful means of support in their life as Catholics in a Muslim country, at times subject to discrimination and violence. However among the Radio Veritas audience members there were also men and women Muslims who voiced appreciation for its contribution towards promoting dialogue and peace. One of the speakers, Jesuit Fr Gaston Roberge traced the origin and development of Radio Veritas Bengali programmes, produced at Radio Veritas central studios in Manila, and also locally in India and Bangladesh.
