EUROPE/ITALY - Mission territories deserve more media attention say Italian missionaries
Rome (Fides Service)- “We are dismayed by the way in which Italian media ignore problems in mission territories”: this lament is often voiced by missionaries working in Africa, Asia or Latin America with whom we come into contact. “However we realise that media in other western countries also show little interest for missionary situations” the missionaries add.
It is a question of ethics more than the management of public or private media the missionaries say. As Pope Benedict XVI said yesterday “Authentic communication demands principled courage and resolve. It requires a determination of those working in the media not to wilt under the weight of so much information nor even to be content with partial or provisional truths”. We reiterate the Holy Father’s call to the media to be “responsible - to be the protagonist of truth and promoter of the peace that ensues.
To call on the Italian media, TV in particular to give more space to problems in non European countries the Federation of Missionary Press , (FESMI) published an editorial signed by the editors of 42 missionary publications. (Agenzia Fides 25/1/2006 righe 22 parole 246)
