Mangalore (Fides Service) - The Catholic Church in India has always been known for its service of the poorest of the poor and caring for the sick. One more example of this commitment is a new Palliative Care Centre for needy cancer Patients opened recently in the diocese of Mangalore, Karnataka state in south west India. The Cynthia Fernandes Memorial Palliative Centre in Kallianpur will be managed by the Dharma Jyothi Social Service Organisation and the Sisters of Our Lady Queen of Apostles
The Centre - which is part of the local Goretti Catholic Hospital, run by the same Sisters - will care exclusively for people with cancer, especially needy patients, providing medical attention, medication and spiritual assistance. The centre which has 27 rooms was donated by Leslie Fernandes in memory of his wife Cynthia who died of cancer two years ago.
Presiding the inauguration Mass and ceremony Bishop Aloysius D’Souza of Mangalore, diocese recalled that the Catholic Church is in front line to care for people with AIDS, leprosy, TB and other illnesses, explaining that that for Christians service to a person who suffers or is in need is a service to Christ himself. In this spirit the Bishop blessed the new Centre where people who suffer and those who care for them will experience and share God’s love. (Agenzia Fides 18/1/2006 righe: 23; parole: 231)
