Saturday, 10 December 2005

Brasilia (Fides Service) - In Brazil the annual Lenten Fraternity Campaign organised for the past 40 years by the Catholic community is always an opportunity for evangelisation since it promotes a sense of brotherhood and an authentic culture of solidarity in keeping with the teaching of the Gospel. The Lenten Fraternity Campaign 2006 on the theme “Fraternity with persons with a disability” will focus on the situation and difficulties encountered by people with a disability, frequently victims of prejudice and discrimination, particularly in the ambit of a culture which privileges the healthy, strong and good looking and marginalises or excludes people less able to affirm themselves. Lenten Fraternity Campaign 2006 intends to encourage reflection, discussion, prayer and concrete solidarity with personal and community initiatives.
In this perspective Lenten Fraternity Campaign 2006 has the following objectives: learn about and reflect on the situation of persons with a disability in the light of the Word of God Word of God and Christian morals to encourage greater fraternity and solidarity in their regard and promote respect for the dignity and rights; indicate the Gospel values which should guide relations with persons with a disability; guarantee respect for the individual and social rights of persons with a disability and their families; promote autonomy of persons with a disability, support organisations and movements in this field; promote their effective participation in society, family and Church; encourage and support individual and community initiatives, public policies to insert, valorise and protect persons with a disability and their families in the world of the school, work and in the life of the Church and in cultural and sports and social activities.
