ASIA/INDIA - Kottar diocese in Tamil Nadu builds 2,600 new homes for tsunami survivors

Thursday, 1 December 2005

Pondicherry (Fides Service) - Kottar diocese in the southern Indian state of Tamil Nadu has built 2,600 new homes for fisherfolk and other people who lost everything in the tremendous sea quake on 26 December 2004. The work was undertaken in collaboration with two NGOs Intervida and Siffs. Half the homes have already been handed over to the happy families and the rest will be ready before the end of the year. Fr. R. Lawrence, parish priest at Keezha stressed that aid must include long term programmes for resettling and development.
Catholics in India have worked hard to assist tsunami victims. Almost a year to the day of that disaster which hit vast areas of south east Asia Caritas India opened a web site on the disaster and progress in aid http://www.caritastsunamirelief.com to inform people of what has been done and what remains to be achieved and to encourage contributions to this immense task.
