ASIA/PHILIPPINES - From Mindanao to all Asia: Archbishop Orlando Quevedo new General of the Federation of Asia Bishops’ Conferences

Cotabato (Fides Service) - Archbishop Orlando Quevedo of Cotabato in Mindanao, southern Philippines, has been appointed secretary general (head) of the Federation of Asian Bishops’ Conferences. Archbishop Quevedo who has served as President of the Philippines Bishops’ Conference for two mandates was elected by the FFABC central committee at a recent meeting in Hu Hin Thailand.
In recent years the Archbishop has been an active collaborator with the FABC helping to draft several fundamental documents. He is cordial and willing and has a great capacity for vision. He has always supported FABC and is appreciated by the Church and society in the Philippines.
His new task will be to co-ordinate FABC activity which works through different commissions. His first job will be to prepare for the Asian Mission Congress to be held in Thailand in October 2006 on the theme: “The story of Jesus Christ in Asia. A celebration of faith and live”, organised jointly with the Congregation for the Evangelisation of Peoples and expected to draw over 1,000 delegates from all over the continent .
FABC is an association of Bishops’ Conferences based in Hong Kong. It was instituted with the approval of the Holy See. Its aim is to ‘promote among its members solidarity and responsibility for the good of Church and society in Asia, defending and promoting the common good’.
Recent FABC activities include a symposium on the relationship between social communications and traditional culture in Asia, held in Thailand. It also organised the first international East Asian Meeting on Women and a regional edition of World Youth Day, Asia Youth Day.
