Coro (Agenzia Fides) - The "Justice and Peace" Commission of the Episcopal Conference of Venezuela expresses deep sorrow for what happened in the region of Barlovento, Miranda state, where the bodies of a group of 12 young men and women, stopped by soldiers on October 15, were found on November 28 in a mass grave. These acts happened following the so-called Operation Liberation and Protection of the People (OLP), carried out by State security forces.
"We denounce - reads the document sent to Fides - the way in which relevant operations of the OLP are carried out in the country in which state authorities have not fulfilled their obligations to prevent violations of human rights, guarantee personal freedom, due process and housebreaking. We also denounce the attitude of pride and of not listening on behalf of the State, which refused and continues to refuse international law; the inefficiency of the state in its inescapable duty to control social violence".
The document calls on the competent state authorities, "to guarantee fundamental rights for all citizens of our country" and concludes by expressing solidarity with the families of the 12 young people killed. The text is signed by His Exc. Mgr. Roberto Luckert Leon, Emeritus Archbishop of Coro, and President of the Commission. (CE) (Agenzia Fides, 07/12/2016)
