AMERICA - AIDS in Latin America has the face of a child: 2.1 million Latin Americans infected

Wednesday, 9 November 2005

Rome (Fides Service) - In Latin America and the Caribbean 2.1 million people are infected with the HIV/AIDS virus and 80 per cent of those infected are under 30 years of age.
In the last decade infection has increased mainly among women largely due to sexual promiscuity and male chauvinism. Countries with the highest number of infected people are Guatemala, Belize, Honduras, Panama, Jamaica, Guyana, Barbados and first on the list Dominican Republic where 1 percent of the people are infected by HIV/AIDS.
In Mexico the percentage is 0.3 per cent of the population but this number is the result of a count of those who accepted to be tested for HIV/AIDS.
From San Salvador UNICEF has launched a campaign with the slogan “AIDS has the face of a child” which will cross the whole Latin America and Caribbean region and which aims to stop the transmission of the virus to minors. (AP) (9/11/2005 Agenzia Fides; Righe:16; Parole:189)
