Saturday, 5 November 2005

Honiara (Fides Service) - The role of the media is to inform, educate and enhance the lives of people said Fr. Ambrose Pereira in the third issue of the Catholic quarterly Voice Katolika in its new format. The magazine has been re-launched by the Church in Solomons to be more incisive in society, meet the challenge to communicate, inform and form the faithful. The magazine, which called for readers opinion before modernising its look and contents and is circulated in 1,600 copies, is ever more popular in parishes, associations, movements, schools and religious communities.
Voice Katolika presents articles, contributions by experts and photographs to tell the dynamic and vivacious life of the local Catholic community. The editor is Salesian Fr. Ambrose Pereira, who is also director of Catholic Communications Solomons.
The title of 2005 Third Quarter Catholic Church Solomons SDB is Empowering people, Building Community and it focuses on themes such as how to evangelise through the media, the media in democracy, education to a critical use of the media, positive and negative aspects of the mass media, recalling that the media are an essential channel for building any kind of human community, and therefore important also for the Catholic community. This is why the local Church encourages the use of media and has already its own magazine, broadcaster, Radio don Bosco, and Information Service on the Internet.
Fr. Ambrose writes “communications is very important for raising the level of instruction in a country with many social problems. In fact 20% of the population of 450,000 islanders are unable to read or write. Many of those who have an education are either Christians were educated at Christian schools of which there are many.
