ASIA/CHINA - Catholics in mainland China ever more involved in social assistance

Shi Jia Zhuang (Fides Service) - Catholics in mainland China are ever more involved in providing social assistance. According to Hebei Faith Press 15 October 2005 in China Catholics run 55 Homes for the elderly, 167 clinics and hospitals, 25 infant centres, 11 homes for babies born with a disability, 31 centres for leprosy treatment. Dozens of Catholic religious work in 17 government leprosy centres and numerous priests, nuns and lay Catholics work to prevent HIV/AIDS and treat patients affected by the virus.
The Catholic Church is also very active in the field of education. Faith Bulletin alone offers study grants for schools of all grades as well as a prestigious ‘Faith study grant for religious formation’ instituted in 2003 at the famous Dawn University Shanghai.
