Friday, 28 October 2005

New Delhi (Fides Service) - Indian Christians are under shock after yet another episode of anti-Christian violence. On 25 October five Catholics nuns were attacked by Hindu extremists in Bhandaria, Banswara district, Rajasthan state, north west India. The Sisters, of the Congregation of the Handmaids of the Lord were waiting for a bus when they were attacked by a group of youths armed with knives and sticks. One of the nuns, Sr Rosario, aged 68 was gravely injured, the others were injured less seriously.
According to local sources the episode could be a reaction to a mjjor Christian Convention held recently in the area to close the Year of the Eucharist attended by over 5,000 Christians, mainly Tribals. Extremists members of Sangh Parivar wanted to prevent it but the convention was held with police protection. Social tension has increased in recent weeks: on 21 Octobee 2 lay Christians were insulted and beaten and Christians in the are denounce a growing climate of intimidation .
Sajan K. George, President of the ecumenical Global Council of Indian Christians condemned the episode, but said that Christians remain firm in their faith. Mr George was received in a private audience by Pope Benedict XVI on 19 October. He said the Pope was very sympathetic and encouraging. “I told the Pope about the situation of Christians in India and the violence we suffer. I also gave him a detailed report on cases of anti-Christian violence. The Pope assured me of his sympathy and prayers for those killed and for all Christians in India, expressing appreciation for our work and the work of the Church in India”.
