UNITED NATIONS - Every 15 minutes a child is infected by HIV virus. Only 5 per cent of the world’s HIV+ children receive medical care

Rome (Fides Service) - At least 18 million children in Sub-Saharan Africa are in danger of becoming orphans by the end of 2010 because of the AIDS virus. According to the United Nations Children’s Fund UNICEF only 5 per cent of the world’s HIV+ children receive medical care.
Because they are ill many children live an unhappy infancy, they are denied medicine, food, education and other essential elements for growth.
UNICEF and UNAIDS have launched a world wide campaign “Unite for Children, Unite against AIDS” to accelerate responses destined for those in danger of being infected by HIV or those already infected.
UNICEF has also launched an international campaign to help children victims of this disease, which will focus mainly on Africa, but will also involve central Asia and eastern Europe. The campaign will promote prevention mother/children transmission of HIV/AIDS and guarantee HIV+ children adequate therapy. (AP) (28/10/2005 Agenzia Fides; Righe:18; Parole:193)
