Tehran (Agenzia Fides) - The end of the embargo against Iran "is for all of us who belong to the Iranian people, a historic event. There is widespread happiness, that embraces all the people, both Muslims and Christians. And I, as a priest, see this as a sign of the Lord’s blessing, in this Jubilee of Mercy". This is how Iranian priest Hormoz Babroudi Aslani, of the diocese of Salmas Urmias of the Assyrian Chaldeans, National Director of the Pontifical Mission Societies in Iran (Pom), describes the atmosphere perceivable even among Christians in the Country, as they begin to feel the first effects of the agreement on nuclear power reached in Vienna on 14 July and entered into force on 16 January.
On the eve of the meeting between President Hassan Rohani and Pope Francis, the Chaldean priest emphasizes the merits that the Iranian Head of State and Ayatollah Ali Khamenei had in facilitating the breakthrough that opens a new phase in relations between Iran and the international community: "We must thank all those responsible" refers to Fides don Hormoz "who worked hard for this to happen, so important for Iran and for the whole world, from President Rohani to all his collaborators. We must not forget the Spiritual Guide, who from the beginning supported and encouraged policymakers to do their duty in the best possible way, so that the world knew the goodwill and the value of the Iranian people".
The long years of "unjust embargo" adds the Director of the PMS in Iran "created difficulties in the life of an entire people, but they did not destroy hope. Despite the embargo and the pressure placed on Iran unfairly, the people remained united and went forward in the development of technology, science and culture". According to the Iranian priest, the embargo is also the defeat of propaganda operations put in place to put the country in a bad light: "For years", remarked Don Hormoz "Iran documented before the whole world its peaceful intentions on the issue of nuclear power. I think the end of embargo is also an effect of the many prayers, to ask to be recognized by the world as peaceful people and peace-loving, unlike the false opinions spread in various parts of the world".
