ASIA/GEORGIA - A Camillian brother is the first Catholic religious to make his profession in Georgia in two centuries

Friday, 16 September 2005

Tbilisi(Fides) - In Georgia for the first time in two hundred years a Catholic religious has just taken his perpetual vows. Camillan brother Akaki Chelidre made his perpetual vows on 4 September in the Church of Saints Peter and Paul in Tbilisi capital of Georgia, in the hands of Italian Camillan Father Antonio Menegon of the Piedmont province of Camillians on which the Caucasic foundation depends.
Because of domination by Russian Zars and then Soviet Communism for two hundred years there have been no Catholic religious professions in Georgia. (AP) (16/09/2005 Agenzia Fides; Righe:11; Parole: 104)
