AMERICA/PUERTO RICO - 3rd National Missionary Youth Congress: “Go out to the whole world to preach the Gospel” putting Jesus’ command into practice today

Caguas (Fides Service) - About 2,000 young people will be meeting from 1-4 September in Caguas (Puerto Rico) to celebrate the 3rd national Missionary Youth Congress. Previous congresses were held in Ponce in August 1998 attended by over 800 young people and in Mayagüez in 2001. The Congress is for young people connected with the Pontifical Mission Societies in Venzuela, Mexico, Panama, Honduras, Peru and Ecuador. The young visitors are hosted in local families. The congress aims to increase the youngsters’ spirit of mission in their own community and to encourage them also to go on mission to other countries.
Papal Delegate in Puerto Rico Archbishop Timothy Broglio will preside the opening Mass and Bishop Rubén González Medina of Caguas a Claretian missionary will preside the closing Mass on Sunday 4 September. On the Saturday the young participants will make a pilgrimage on foot to Caguas Cathedral for a Mass presided by Bishop Iñaki Mallona of Arecibo. The programme of the congress includes testimonials, conferences, group discussion and musical performances all oriented on how to put into practice today the command of Jesus: “Go out into the whole world and preach the Gospel”. There will also be time for young volunteers who took part in a Missionary Summer organised by the PMS Puerto Rico will share their experience in various countries of central America. Missionary institues and congregations will also present their activity and material and photographs of missionari activity will be on view at a special Mission Exhibition.
