VATICAN - Mgr Giuseppe Cavallotto Rector of the Pontifical Urban University appointed Bishop of Cuneo and Fossano

Vatican City (Fides Service) - The Holy Father, Pope Benedixt XVI has appointed Bisahop of the dioceses of Cuneo and Fossano (Italy), united “in the person of the bishop”, Mgr Giuseppe Cavallotto a member of the clergy of Asti, until now rector of the Pontifical Urban University in Rome. The appointment was made public on 24 August 2005.
Mgr Giuseppe Cavallotto was born in the village of Noche di Vinchio, diocese and province of Asti, 13 February 1940. He studied for the priesthood at Asti seminary and was ordained a priest on 29 June 1964 after which he was appointed director of Asti minor seminary for three years (1964-1967). Sent to Rome for higher studies at the Salesian University he obtained a doctorate in Education Science in 1984. He has since held the following posts: Central Ecclesiastical Assistent, National Catholic Action Office and head of catechesis ACR Sector (1969-1979) ; member of the Italian Bishops Commission for drafting a catechism for pre-adolescents (1973-1982); Docent "Regina at Mundi" Pastoral Institute (1975-1988); Docent of missionary catechesis at Urban University (since 1979); joint Docent at missiology faculty (since1985); member of the Italian Bishops Commission for proposed catechumenate in Italy (dal 1993); Dean of the faculty of missiology at Urban University (since 1995); Consultor of the Congregation for the Evangelisation of Peoples (since 1997). Since 2004 rector of Urban University. The author of various works on catechesis and catechumenate he has collaborated in various articles on the same subject in study and pastoral publications and dictionaries. (S.L.)
