VATICAN - The Pope offers sincere condolences to the clergy and faithful of Isiolo after the assassination of the Vicar apostolic and expresses gratitude for the Bishop’s life of witness in telegrammes to the Papal Nuncio in Kenya and the Archbishop of Vercelli

Vatican City (Fides Service) - On behalf of Pope Benedict XVI Cardinal Angelo Sodano Holy See secretary of state addressed a telegramme to the Papal Nuncio in Kenya Archbishop Alain Lebeaupin in which he said the Holy Father, “deeply saddened by the tragic death of Bishop Luigi Locati, offers sincere condolences and assures his closeness in prayer to the clergy and religious of the Vicariate Apostolic of Isiolo”. The Pope entrusts “the noble soul of the deceased Bishop to the infinite mercy of God our Father” and “gives thanks for the selfless witness to the Gospel and promotion of human dignity which characterised his ministry as a priest and a bishop”. Lastly the Pope said he prayed that “the death of Bishop Locati will accelerate the restoration of that peace and reconciliation to which he was so totally dedicated”.
In a second telegramme on behalf of the Pope addressed to the Archbishop of Vercelli archdicoese from where Bishop Locati originated, Cardinal Sodano said the Holy Father “deeply saddened by the barbaric assassination of Bishop Luigi Locati” expresses deepest sympathy to the diocesan community and to the family of this heroic missionary. Lastly Benedict XVI thanked God for “the generous ministry of this praiseworthy Bishop among the people of Kenya” and said he prays “for the repose of the Bishop’s soul asking God to grant him the deserved eternal reward”.
