Rome (Fides Service) - According to the regional director of the United Nations World Food Programme WFP for Latin America and the Caribbean, the development of countries in this area depends on the diet of the people.
Hunger and malnutrition must be eliminated in order to eradicate poverty seeing that, according to experts, economic growth is connected with the nutritional situation of the people. What is needed therefore is a direct intervention, because 55 million children in Latin America suffer from malnutrtion.
Experts also say that investments in the fields of education, job creation and healthcare are insufficient.
The United Nations Food and Agriculture Organisation FAO estimates that 25 billion dollars per year are needed to eliminate hunger. (AP) (13/7/2005 Agenzia Fides; Righe:16; Parole:138)
