Mosul (Fides Service)- “As soon as people saw the signal of the white smoke on television they took to the streets to celebrate the election of the new Pope” Fr. Nizar Semaan, Catholic priest in Karakosh in northern Iraq told Fides. “And when they saw Benedict XVI on the balcony of St Peter’s the people’s joy exploded. They blessed themselves and started to pray for the new Pontiff” Fr Nizar told Fides. “They were saying “We do not know him yet but we will learn to love him. The important thing is that we have a Pope again”.
Celebrations in Karakosh continued into the night. “Church bells rang every hour, young people drove about the streets sounding car horns, people sang and danced in the streets: it was a real popular festive gathering. Iraqi Catholics are proud to have a Pope” the priest concluded. (L.M.) (Agenzia Fides 20/4/2005 righe 16 parole 190)
