Rome (Fides Service) - “Deeply moved we listened to the words of Benedict XVI, the humility of his request for prayers, his confidence in the grace of God who knows how to employ our humanity to carry God’s friendship to every man and women and defeat the harshness of all that humiliates human life. We assure our new Bishop of Rome our prayers and our affection” was the message written by the S. Egidio Community on the election of the new Pope.
“We like the name he has chosen which immediately speaks of peace and the courage to make a demanding and attractive proposal to be Christians at a complex time. His predecessor Benedict XV was against war and St Benedict was the father of monasticism in the west and pillar of the continent Europe which today stands only to benefit from the rediscovery of the riches of its Christian roots.
Our Community was born in the Church in Rome and we are delighted to have Benedict XVI as our new Bishop. We assure him of our prayers and our affection and our cooperation in the grave tasks he now faces.
God has chosen a man of meekness, a tireless and loving worker for the Church, a man with profound knowledge of today’s world. This is the beginning of a new era of hope and spirit for the Church and for the world.” (AP) (20/4/2005 Agenzia Fides; Righe:22 Parole:274)
