ASIA/INDIA - Out of danger, vicar general of Patna diocese attacked by common criminal not Hindu fundamentalist

Patna (Fides Service) - Out of danger Fr Mathhew Uzhuthal,vicar general of Patna diocese , stabbed on 11 April at his parish offices. “Fr Matthew miraculously survived after being wounded in the neck and the chest. “Although he lost a lot of blood he was saved by the hand of God and the speedy intervention of his fellow priests who rushed him to hospital”, spokesman of the Indian Bishops’ Conference Rev. Babu Joseph told Fides. Fr. Matthew was at first taken to a small local clinic Nazareth Hospital but was then moved to a larger hospital in Patna for specialist treatment.
The local Church is relieved that Fr Matthew will live and hope he will be home soon. In the meantime police investigators say the attacker was a common criminal in search of money and not a Hindu fundamentalist.
