ASIA/INDIA - Bishops of Latin Rite will discuss themes concerning the Family at next assembly

Thursday, 3 February 2005

New Delhi (Fides Service) - “Family: good news for India” is the theme of the next plenary assembly of the Bishops of Latin Rite to be held in early March at Ranchi, Jharkhand state. Some 121 Bishops of Latin Rite will attend the meeting. The Catholic Church in India has Bishops of two other rites Syro-Malabar and Syro-Malankar. The three together form one Conference.
The Latin Bishops will reflect on family pastoral care as a central part of the Church’s mission, identifying new paths for pastoral work and how to help families take a more active part in the life of the Church and her mission to evangelise.
“The family is of capital importance for Christian life and also for personal and social life. Jesus lived in a family. The Holy Family is an example for all”, said Father Sebastian, Vice Secretary of the Bishops Conference. “Today family life is in danger. It is exposed to many threats, human mobility, poverty, cultural and moral relativism. The family is the basis for the Church’s mission. The foundations of a happy and serene life in society are found in the family”.
The Assembly will examine the problems, challenges, risks and opportunities facing the Church in India in the third millennium in relation to the family.
